The resort city of Daytona Beach has been catering to vacationers since the late 1800s. With a 23 mi (37 km) long strip of beach, this area boasts innumerable opportunities for sunbathing, beachcombing, surfing, parasailing and other water activities. But before it became a popular beach destination, Daytona Beach was known for its racing. For years, speed demons flocked to this seaside city to test their skills. With its soft, compressed sands and wide expanses of shoreline, the beaches were an ideal place for drivers to take their cars out for a trial run. The Daytona Beach Road Course, the strip that helped to shape NASCAR, saw countless stock cars rocket down the speedway since its beginnings in the early 1900s. This wide beach track was witness to more than a dozen world land speed records. While many racing records have been set on the shores of Daytona Beach, racing is no longer permitted on the beaches. However, cars are still allowed to roam the strip of sand at established speeds. To quench that thirst for speed, the world-famous Daytona International Speedway was opened in 1959. In addition to hosting the Daytona 500, one of the most esteemed races in North America, the speedway holds numerous races and events throughout the year. Thousands of speed enthusiasts visit Daytona Beach each year just for the chance to immerse themselves in motorsports history.

Summertime is also known for frequent and sometimes severe thunderstorms and plenty of rain. No matter what time of the year, visitors should always pack an abundance of sunscreen, as well as rain gear.
The Daytona Beach area is also vulnerable to tropical storms and hurricanes. Although they have been infrequent in this region in the past, the area has seen an increase in hurricanes and tropical storms around the eastern Florida coast, although they rarely hit land. The hurricane season in east central Florida officially begins June 1 and lasts until November 30, with the peak being from mid August to mid October. Visitors who plan to vacation during this period should check with their lodging to see what measures are taken to ensure the safety of guests should a hurricane touch down. Visitors have the option of staying on the mainland, west of the Halifax River, or seaside, on the eastern half of the city. This includes vacation home rentals, which are fully furnished homes and condominiums that are available to be rented out throughout the year, and extended stay suites. Extended stay suites are often found within hotels, are completely furnished and come with fully equipped kitchens. A few full-service resorts are also available. The majority are located directly on the beach and offer added conveniences such as fun family programs and activities, on-site spas and restaurants. For those who prefer to stay away from the busyness of large hotels, bed and breakfasts are another great alternative.
